Local shops in need of our support

-

THIS past week has taught us how tightly North Queenslanders band together in times of crisis.

Whole streets of people helped each other move their belongings upstairs or offered shelter.

Then there was the Townsville City Council workers, the SES, police, firefighters and Defence Force who all combined to keep our city safe.

There was the great “tinnie navy” of ordinary folk who rescued residents as well as their pets from rising waters.

Businesses put their hands in their pocket, volunteers manned drop-off centres and the mud army formed and started tackling the grime.

The point is, so far, we’ve battled this monster monsoon together.

It’s so important we continue that sense of unity to rebuild together.

Our businesses are also in a world of hurt right now. Some have been flood damaged and others haven’t been able to open and have had to cover employee wages while not bringing in any revenue.

Some will have lost their homes as well as their business.

There’s never been a more important time to shop local.

If you are one of the 5000 people who have lost your car, tell your insurer you want to buy from a local dealer who lives locally and employs local people.

If you need building work done, ask for a local tradie first.

If you need new household items try to visit local businesses.

The more money we can keep in this community right now, the better we are going to come out of this disaster.

Don’t forget that when the chips are down, regardless of the circumstances, it’s these local businesses who support local charities.

Townsville, now is the time to be parochial and to stick together, your neighbours and our city is depending on it.
