Keep victims in mind
THE effects of the recent flood that has ravaged North Queensland have been overwhelming and the result is highly evident when you travel around our city of Townsville or sitting at home and viewing on television the damage that occurred.
What is happening now in Townsville is a major clean up and the usual jostling with insurance companies, and that is the first step.
Now my brief is I believe that is all that will happen, and after two weeks, those stricken people affected by the floods will be left alone to fend for themselves, which will be catastrophic to say the least. Imagine yourself in that position of isolation and despair.
I would therefore wish to make a plea to Mayor Jenny Hill and the Townsville City Council to make an urgent request to our Prime Minister and the Queensland Premier to make a return visit to our city or for them to designate representatives to view again all the aspects of what can be done for the citizens of Townsville, who have been dealt a savage blow, which can be rectified as quickly as possible with government support.
Something drastically has to be done to return people to their haven and their way of life, and money for support is the answer. It all has to be done now, because as the days go by, the pressure valve is consistently changing and that spells disaster for the unfortunate people who have endured so much. Some would still be in a state of shock and they are trying to assess their position.
The problem facing our city is there for all to see. The council may be hesitant to make the call, but these are desperate times that call for desperate measures to be taken. Now is the time to make that call.
I would add I was fortunate to escape any problems with the flood. However as a member of this great community, I realise others are suffering and hope that can change rapidly over the coming weeks for their wellbeing.
FRED WOODHEAD,
North Ward.
