CASH LIFELINE A LIFT FOR LIONS

- CHRIS HONNERY

THE junior club of NRL star Valentine Holmes has received a $25,000 boost to get back into pre-season training after flooding inundated its fields.

The State Government this week announced floodaffected sporting clubs can now apply for an additional $20,000 to assist with repairs and rebuilding.

Several sporting facilities throughout Townsville were destroyed by the weather event earlier this month, with many still yet to reopen.

The Western Lions Rugby League Football Club was awarded a $25,000 funding boost on Tuesday after suffering damage to the playing fields, clubhouse and power supply.

Lions RLFC vice president of the seniors side Brett Madsen said the club hoped to be back up and running in a “matter of weeks”.

“This flooding has been a real kick in the guts for a lot of people but I think it’s important to get kids back into recreational activities,” he said.

“Having this assistance and funding from the State Government will help us get back on track.

“We suffered a lot of damage to the grounds and elec- trical damage has rendered our lighting out of action, which means we can’t train at night so all teams are suffering because we can’t use our facilities.”
