‘New era’ for Cowboys
THE Cowboys hierarchy say that it is confident that the club’s new crop of players will continue the team’s success as they enter the post-johnathan Thurston era.
The club has undergone a signing spree in the past 12 months, with the recent poaching of Josh Mcguire and Jordan Kahu from Brisbane, as well as contract extensions for Coen Hess and Michael Morgan last year.
Cowboys chairman Laurence Lancini said that the club was focused on “building bet- ter players” as they enter a period of change both on and off the field. “It is a new era,” he said. “We talk about the postJohnathan era. I’m very enthusiastic as to where this club is, both on and off the field. Our stance has always been at this club, if you build better men, you’ll have a better club and that’s something we’ve always maintained.
“Obviously referring to the Ben Barba case, it was disappointing for the club but we made the only decision we needed to make.”
Lancini’s comments follow the board’s official appointment of new chief executive officer Jeff Reibel and chief operating officer Micheal Luck as part of the club’s administration restructure.
Reibel said he was excited about the prospect team’s current squad.
“Number one, you’re never going to replace a Johnathan Thurston,” he said.
“But when you look at the recruitment and retention that we’ve done from a football perspective – Josh Mcguire is here now, Coen Hess has resigned with the club, Jason Taumalolo on a 10-year deal, Michael Morgan on a five-year deal.
“We’ve got the great nucleus of a football team.” of the
