Flood-damaged bridge open for business

-

APLINS Weir bridge has been reopened after being severely damaged in the monsoon.

Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the bridge opened on the weekend.

“Council crews have made replacement handrails for the bridge as well as fixing the erosion and clearing up the debris,” Cr Walker said.

“Our staff have been outstanding since the monsoon and the handrails are another example of the talent we have within our ranks.” Infrastructure Committee chair Councillor Mark Molachino praised the crews involved in the project.

“The work is ahead of schedule, which is great for the local community, as Aplins Weir bridge is a popular place for walking, cycling and fishing,” Cr Molachino said.

Division 6 councillor Verena Coombe said the repairs to the bridge were crucial as it was a key asset in the area.

“It was incredibly important for council crews to repair this community infrastructure because having the bridge reopened provides families with greater access to the great public spaces on either side of the river,” she said.

Division 8 councillor Maurie Soars said Aplins Weir bridge was an important asset.

“It’s a popular link between Annandale and Aitkenvale and it is used by kids and parents to access schools and sporting clubs,” Cr Soars said.

Electrical works were still being completed and some lights are not operational at this stage. The council is encouraging residents to avoid walking across the bridge at night.
