No word on One Nation’s hopeful
PAULINE Hanson’s One Nation are yet to reveal who their candidate for the seat of Herbert will be at the federal election, with nominations set to close at noon today.
It is understood the party does have a candidate in mind but were unable to confirm yesterday who would be pitted against incumbent MP Cathy O’toole.
Other candidates confirmed in the seat are the LNP’S Phil Thompson, Katter’s Australian Party’s Nanette Radeck, The Greens’ Sam Blackadder and recent entrant Greg Dowling of the United Australia Party.
Candidate nominations for the federal election, to be held on May 18, close at noon today.
One Nation preferences played a significant role in ultra-marginal Herbert at the 2016 federal election, with 51.6 per cent of preferences flowing to Labor’s Cathy O’toole.
Ms O’toole clinched the seat by 37 votes.
The One Nation candidate that year was Geoff Virgo, who left the party shortly afterwards before running as an independent for the seat of Mundingburra at the last state election.
Malcolm Charlwood, who ran for One Nation in Mundingburra, ruled himself out as a candidate.
Mr Charlwood said he was ineligible to run for the party federally because his mother is British, meaning he would fall foul of dual citizenship rules.
Other political parties that ran candidates in Herbert in 2016, including the Glenn Lazarus Team and Family First, are now defunct.
The Liberal Democrats are expected to announce their candidates today, but it is unknown if anyone will run under the party banner in Herbert.
