CARNIVAL IS OVER

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

EMILY Harris, 5, was one of the tens of thousands who enjoyed this year’s Townsville Show which finished yesterday.

THE Townsville Show has set what organisers believe is an attendance record after an estimated 60,000 people went through the gates during the four-day event.

Close to 7000 pre-sold tickets were sold in the leadup to this year’s show, which ended overnight with the Strongman competition, and show organiser Chris Condon said he was blown away with how popular the event had been with showgoers.

“It will take about a week to get exact figures but we estimate that it would have been about 60,000 people across the whole weekend,” Mr Condon said.

“Saturday was the busiest day we’ve ever had and we can tell that because of the income.

“People have been doing it tough and we wanted to make sure we made it affordable and put on good entertainment.

“It’s not just about the rides and we brought in some new shows this year, such as the human cannonball, and now we’ll need to find something new for next year.

“We’re over the moon with how this year’s show has gone.”

Emily Harris, 5, and her dad Jordan were among the thousands who went to the show’s final day yesterday, and are already counting the days until next year’s show.

“It was an amazing weekend and an amazing time for us,” Mr Harris said.

“It was the first show for Emily and she said it was the best day of her life.

“She just had to have anything to do with unicorns.”

Leo, 9, and Nate, 5, Valinoti went along to the show with their mum Stacey and were keen to get on as many rides as possible.

“It was their first time at the show and they had a ball,” Ms Valinoti said.

“It’s just a great day and great for the family.”
