Blues gets festival ready for more fun

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

TOWNSVILLE lapped up the sounds of sweet blues at the weekend as the North Australian Festival of Arts entered its third week.

An all-star line-up of North Queensland blues musicians including 8 Ball Aitken and Rebecca Davey played for more than four hours in the Wonderland Spiegeltent at Strand Park during Sunday’s entertainment.

Bernie Dieter’s Little Death Club kept the show going afterwards, and led her troupe though its last Townsville performance following a 10-day run of shows that bedazzled local audiences.

Also performing its last show was Circus Wonderland – a Mermaid’s Tale, which proved a hit with local families.

Councillor Ann-maree Greaney said Strand Park was the perfect location to hold open-air events.

“There will be plenty of events and activities at Strand Park and right across the city – there is definitely something to suit everyone,” she said.

The entertainment will step up a gear today as North Queensland Performing Arts presents its opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.

Billed as a production that illuminates the power of the human spirit, the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice made its Broadway debut in 1971.

Author and public speaker Clementine Ford will also present a discussion during One Title One Townsville from 6pm in the Wonderland Spiegeltent.
