From August to December this year, works including environmental investigations, boundary fencing, and signage will be completed to define the new Greenvale Training Area.
Early works between 2020 and 2022 will be delivered by “medium works” contractors and will see the removal of any unnecessary infrastructure such as sheds, dams, bores and buildings. Basic track construction and repairs will be completed during this period.
The main works between 2022 and 2027 will be delivered by a managing contractor, some of which will include civil works, medical facilities, range control, and airfield construction.
Australia-singapore Military Training Initiative business and community liaison officer Mick Reilly said the Defence Department was working to ensure local industry benefited from the project.
“Defence has adapted procurement processes to support local and regional businesses and encourage them with guidance through capability plan templates,” he said.
Townsville Enterprise chief executive officer Patricia O’callaghan said an economic development advisory committee had been established to explore bilateral opportunities with Singapore.
“We will be taking another delegation to Singapore later this year to continue building upon these opportunities in partnership with the High Commissioner’s office,” she said.
“The importance of the Singapore partnership in developing the future economy of our region cannot be emphasised enough.”
