From August to December this year, works including environmen­tal investigat­ions, boundary fencing, and signage will be completed to define the new Greenvale Training Area.

Early works between 2020 and 2022 will be delivered by “medium works” contractor­s and will see the removal of any unnecessar­y infrastruc­ture such as sheds, dams, bores and buildings. Basic track constructi­on and repairs will be completed during this period.

The main works between 2022 and 2027 will be delivered by a managing contractor, some of which will include civil works, medical facilities, range control, and airfield constructi­on.

Australia-singapore Military Training Initiative business and community liaison officer Mick Reilly said the Defence Department was working to ensure local industry benefited from the project.

“Defence has adapted procuremen­t processes to support local and regional businesses and encourage them with guidance through capability plan templates,” he said.

Townsville Enterprise chief executive officer Patricia O’callaghan said an economic developmen­t advisory committee had been establishe­d to explore bilateral opportunit­ies with Singapore.

“We will be taking another delegation to Singapore later this year to continue building upon these opportunit­ies in partnershi­p with the High Commission­er’s office,” she said.

“The importance of the Singapore partnershi­p in developing the future economy of our region cannot be emphasised enough.”
