Townsville Bulletin

Flood of questions on release of dam water

-

THERE are a lot of issues that need further discussion in the flood report.

I read the Bulletin’s story reference the Ross River Dam and one part states “the report also found there would have been nearly no difference in the impact of the flooding if more water had been released from the dam sooner”.

I realised when I read this statement that the dynamics of liquid must have changed in the decades since I left school.

My son and I attended Sheriff Park the day before the disaster to view the water at the top of the bank. It was a spectacular sight at the time viewed by hundreds attending.

If the dam had been open to this level 24 hours earlier that would logically be billions of litres less in the dam.

How would that have not made a difference to the outcome?

The less water in the dam again “logically” would have meant less pressure on the system as less percentage capacity.

I hope my simple logic is wrong and the silver lining from this report is that the people who have suffered can get the insurance companies to stop being obstructive in their claims.

Numerous affected residents that have spoken to me at the markets questioning the timing of the opening to flood this area during darkness?

My thoughts are with the residents still affected by this event no matter who or what was the cause (apart from a load of rain).

From what I have been advised there appears to be questions that need to be answered about the alleged occurrences including what I would call bullying within the Townsville disaster management centre.

Time will tell whether this becomes public knowledge. TREVOR ELSON,

Mundingburra.
