Team sport also teaches respect. Players learn good sportsmanship and how to treat teammates, opponents, umpires, coaches and spectators with respect.

This sportsmanship can also translate into developing stronger relationships and a sense of being part of a community.

So while having your child participating in a team sport has plenty of benefits, how do you choose one that best suits your child?

Townsville Hockey Association may have the answer by way of their Mini Sticks program.

Mini Sticks is a skill-based beginner program, aimed at giving young players the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey, develop fundamental motor skills and make friends, all while beginning their hockey.

Mini Sticks isn’t about playing to win. Participants start in the beginner level and progress as their skills develop, under the guidance of qualified coaches and mentors.

Before they move into the club competition, they transition into the advanced level Kookaroos, where they will learn more game skills.

With two sessions each week in several locations durlifelong love of ing school terms, parents can sign their kids up to one, or both, depending on what best suits their schedule.

The new term for Mini Sticks starts this week but there is still time to register.

All new participants will receive a free hockey stick, socks and shirt.
