Protesters target GHD on Adani mine links

ANTI-ADANI protesters will this week target a multinational engineering company in a number of “colourful protests” from Townsville to Hobart.

The #Stopadani group started its National Week of Action by protesting outside of the Townsville GHD office in Stanley St.

The group claims GHD is one of the biggest contractors to work on the Adani Carmichael project.

Australian Youth Climate Coalition campaigns director Olivia Hall, from Brisbane, said she would be protesting in favour of a switch to renewable energy sources.

“Young people know that to have a safe future we need to keep coal in the ground and switch to cleaner energy,” she said.

“GHD has a choice to make – either build Adani’s mine or help us build a future we can all be proud of. In the Sunshine State, it’s time to harness the power of the sun and each other to build clean energy industries of the future.”

Brisbane physiotherapist, grandfather and member of #Stopadani Indooroopilly, Paul Grace, said GHD’S support for the Adani project contradicted its claim to have a “commitment to sustainable development”.

“Digging and burning the coal from Adani’s mine threatens Queensland’s groundwater, tramples the land rights of traditional owners and drives more intense heatwaves, bushfires, droughts and storms,” he said.

According to the GHD website, there are no clear links between the company and the Adani Carmichael coal mine.

In a separate project, GHD was appointed by North Queensland Bulk Ports to expand the Port of Abbot Point.

GHD has also been contracted by Powerlink to extend the existing high-voltage electricity transmission network into the Galilee Basin region.
