Accused robber gets bail

- SAM BIDEY

A TEENAGER, allegedly involved in a service station robbery that ended when the getaway car was crashed on the Bruce Highway, has been granted bail but will need to abide by a curfew.

Eighteen-year-old Zion Ramon Rewha faced Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday charged with armed robbery with actual violence and three traffic offences, including unlicensed driving.

It will be alleged that at 12.20am on Sunday two men parked their car outside the United service station at Horseshoe Lagoon on the Bruce Highway, went inside and jumped the front counter.

The pair, alleged to be Rewha and 20-year-old co-accused Karlin Rewha-clark, then confronted the male store attendant and demanded access to the cash register.

He complied, and one of the men allegedly took cash from the till before the other punching the attendant in the face. It will be alleged Rewha and Rewha-clark then fled the scene in their car.

Police were notified a short time later that the car had been seen at Horseshoe Lagoon on the Bruce Highway.

The charges indicate Rewha was allegedly driving the car. Officers attended the scene and found a Ford Falcon ute that had crashed near the Haughton Bridge with attempts made to set it on fire.

Police found the men in a culvert off the highway and they were immediately taken into custody.

Inspector Damien said police could lay charges at a later date.

Insp Crosby said the two charged men were siblings.

“We are not alleging the vehicle was stolen,” Insp Crosby said. “The rate of youth crime is concerning and although these men were adults, 18 and 20 is still quite young in the scheme of things.

“However, in a very short period of time these men were arrested, located and charged.”

Police prosecutor Felicity Nalder opposed Rewha’s application for bail, stating the prosecution case was “incredibly strong” and the alleged offending very serious.

But the court heard Rewha had no relevant criminal history and he was willing to abide by bail conditions including a 6pm-4am curfew. RewhaClark did not apply for bail.

Both men will face court again on September 23. Crosby assault
