Beau’s a champ in all sorts of ways

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

AFTER helping steer his under-12 Brothers outfit into the Townsville District Rugby Union grand final, Beau Mccarron was straight off the field and into the car.

After all, he had a junior rugby league game with Western Lions to get to. Then training for the North Queensland Schoolboys 11-12 years side. Then a soccer game for the Brothers club.

And that’s just a Saturday in the life sporting all-rounder.

But just before he could leave the Mike Carney Toyota regular of the Park rugby fields, the Brothers half was awarded the TDRU under-12 player of the season for helping his side to the minor premiership.

Beau, 11, humbly refused to take all the credit for the award, instead sharing the glory with his teammates.

The same went for their 36-12 semi-final glory over Charters Towers Bulls.

Despite scoring a try, and orchestrating a few others, the five-eighth did not want to take the credit.

“It was a team performance. All of the forwards cleared out, they won the ball for us and then the backs got the glory,” the young playmaker said.

He is a boy of few words, instead letting his action do the talking on the field, but for his coach, and more importantly his dad Stephen Mccarron, those few words mean a lot.

“I am glad he said that because it is true,” he said.

“In my side I could have had four or five other blokes collect the award.

“He is the five-eighth, and he is the general. But you need your forwards working hard in front of you, and today we won that game because of our forwards.

“I am really proud actually, I know how hard he works. It is not just union, he works really hard in all of his sports.”

So just how many does Beau play?

According to the youngster he is training every day of the week in all different disciplines including union, league, touch football, Oztag, soccer and cricket. It’s enough to make your head spin. But the conscientious junior has a simple approach.

“Every training is on a different day, so it all fits in,” he said. “I just love it. Rugby and touch are my favourites.”

While the Brothers under-12s will have a two-week wait for the grand final, Beau sports and a few of his teammates will be back in action this week as he represents North Queensland at the under-12 Schoolboy State Rugby Championships.

It is a competition that will pit his side against some of the best schoolboy rugby players across the state.

“I am a bit nervous, because we are versing all the Brisbane teams,” Beau said.

“But we have trained hard. We’re ready.”

The 11-12 years State Championships kick off on Thursday at Mike Carney Toyota Park, while the NQ 14-15 years will travel away to Toowoomba the following Thursday.
