Fairytale finals finish still within reach says Scott

But he felt the key to turning their season around was playing with more confidence when they were leading on the scoreboard.

“I believe we can (still make the finals), but we’ve definitely made it hard for ourselves,” Scott said.

“The last couple of weeks have been a little bit disappointing because we’ve been in positions to win games and couldn’t get across the line. We’ve made our job a lot harder, but it’s still possible.

“I think the problem at the moment is we get a bit passive when we’re in front.

“We go into our shells a bit and try and protect the lead so we talked about just continuing to play footy and play the type of footy that got us in the lead to start with.”

Four of North Queensland’s last six games are against teams still jostling for a finals spot including the 11th placed West Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Thursday night.

The Cowboys have only won once in 10 visits to the “eighth wonder” – with that sole victory coming back in 2000 – but Scott was adamant they could still reignite their season against the 11th-placed Tigers.

“I think that’s probably the lucky thing about the competition at the moment,” he said.

“There’s a lot of teams still vying for seventh and eighth spot.

“Any team that can get on a run from now on is going to pretty much guarantee themselves a finals berth so we just need to make sure that’s us.

“We’ve been pretty good on the road so far this year so it’s a good test for us to go down and get the win and let that kickstart our run home.”

Scott said his looming retirement hasn’t crossed his mind too often on the field, but the premiership-winning forward was keen to soak up every moment at the Cowboys while he still can.

“I’ve known for a few weeks in my own mind, but certainly I’m more comfortable now that it’s out in the open and I can just concentrate on enjoying my time at the club and what I’ve got left,” he said.
