Marathon star chases another miracle

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

DEFENDING Townsville Running Festival marathon winner Tony Gordon says he has nothing to lose in tomorrow’s big race.

Gordon will be among a strong field running in tomorrow’s 42.2km main event, which will feature 2016 marathon winner Dejen Gebrselassie and international trail runner Brendan Davies.

Gordon still rates his 2018 victory a “miracle” and while he’s still giving tomorrow’s marathon a genuine crack, he knows backing up will be tough.

“I really haven’t done a lot of training,” Gordon said.

“Running has taken a back seat in my life over the past year; we welcomed a baby girl nine weeks ago.

“But I’ll be having a swing at it and I might be pushing a top four or five.

“It might end up being a really decent battle and there could be some records broken.

“At the end of the day a marathon is a battle against yourself and I’m just happy to be back out there.”

Gordon is also the president of the Townsville Road Runners and says the running festival was growing stronger every year.

“One year we were in a bit of trouble and I actually thought it might have been the last one, so we just wanted to enjoy it, and when we got there people were everywhere,” he said.

“We’re very hopeful of seeing good numbers again on Sunday.

“It’s great to see people enjoying the event and there really is something for everyone.”

Tomorrow’s running festival starts with the marathon from 5.30am at Jezzine Barracks and also includes the half marathon, 10km classic and 5km junior fun run and walk.
