House riddled with gunshots in drive-by

- JACOB MILEY

A PREGNANT woman and her partner were among those in a Kirwan property when it was shot at in a “targeted” drive-by shooting.

Townsville Police Inspector Sean Dugger said four people were inside the Gould St property about midnight when the house and garage were sprayed with bullets shot from within a car.

Detectives and forensic officers spent the morning combing through the front yard of the property and speaking with neighbours.

The brother of the man who lived at the property told the Townsville Bulletin the attack came as a shock but he was doing all right. He said his brother’s partner was pregnant and at the home at the time.

Insp Dugger said it appeared the shooter targeted the property.

“Initial indications are that this is not a random attack and is more of a targeted nature,” he said. “I can’t comment on the specifics as the investigation is ongoing, but we are very confident there is a connection between the residents of the premises and the offenders.”

It is unclear whether police are searching for more than one attacker.

Insp Dugger would not say what type of weapon was used as it was being investigated or whether the residents of the property were known to police.

The resident’s mother told police it was a rental property and they were going to move out. Neighbour Rhonda Ross said she was woken by four gun shots about midnight.

“I thought they were gunshots so I didn’t move, I just stayed in the bed and tried to listen,” she said.

“I was just a bit scared. I didn’t even want to get up and have a look.”

Ms Ross said she had been at the property for about a year and the residents of the property targeted had been there for longer. The four people inside the property at the time of the shooting have been interviewed by police. It is unclear whether the residents were awake at the time.

Insp Dugger said innocent people could have been injured.

“Firing into a house, whether it be the garage or the dwelling, it has potential to kill someone,” he said.
