Bec sets a shining example

- KATE BANVILLE

INSTILLING a love of learning in little people is what motivates Townsville’s favourite teacher, as voted by you.

Prep teacher Bec Shine said she had the best job in the world teaching children at the start of their education journey.

“I just love to instil that love of learning with children from an early age and seeing the wonder in their eyes when we’re exploring something new,” Ms Shine said.

“You really want to give them that positive start, get them loving school with a solid foundation so that they’re learning journey is successful.”

The St Clare’s Catholic School teacher said she was humbled to be singled out from so many deserving teachers in Townsville.

“I know there’s lots of amazing teachers out there and we all do it because we’re passionate about the kids,” Ms Shine said.

“There’s this common misconception that teachers work nine to three when, in reality, we do spend long hours in the classroom.

“The community is starting to realise there’s a lot of work that goes into it, we just want what’s best for our learners and to do that we do need to be here early and stay late to prepare.”

Ms Shine said it was a nice feeling to win over the parents of her students, many of whom voted for her.

“I just think it’s wonderful to hear from parents why they love their child being in my care,” she said.

“It’s really rewarding seeing how much they learn. Teaching is where my heart is and I know I’ll be in the classroom forever – I’ll be a little old lady teaching prep forever.”
