- TESS IKONOMOU

A MAN had to be taken to hospital after crashing his bike during the Townsville Triathlon and Multisport Festival.

The crash happened on Saturday just before 9am during the Olympic distance triathlon.

A Queensland Police Service official said the man hit something on the road, which caused him to lose control of his bike and hit a traffic control car.

Townsville Triathlon Festival president Jamie Fitzpatrick said there were protocols for when accidents like this happened.

“Queensland Police Service and the Queensland Ambulance Service were on standby and they were immediately able to attend the injured athlete,” he said.

“Our best wishes are for the athlete, his family and his recovery.”

The man is in a stable hospital.

Despite the incident the weekend was a success, with more than 1000 athletes taking part. Mr Fitzpatrick said the event catered for people of all abilities, from the Olympic distance triathlon for professional athletes, to the kids’ triathlon.

“The atmosphere was as good as it’s ever been,” he said. “There were really good conditions; thankfully the temperature was really good, so was the water and it wasn’t windy. “Everybody had a really good time.” Mr Fitzpatrick said registrations for the off-road competition next weekend were strong and quickly filling up.

The offroad competition includes the Cross Triathlon, Adventure Multisport and the Dirty Kids obstacle course. condition in
