Safety first as trap set for 3m croc

- KEAGAN ELDER

A TRAP has been set for a 3m crocodile seen in a lake at a popular caravan park near Townsville.

Staff at the beachfront BIG4 Rollingstone resort spotted two crocodiles at the park on June 11.

A smaller 2.5m croc was captured and removed by the Department of Environment and Science on June 16, although the larger reptile remains on the loose.

“The trap was reset that same afternoon, after DES received a sighting report of a 3m crocodile in the area. That trap remains in place,” a department official said.

“Crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.”

The spokeswoman said Rollingstone was in Zone E, meaning crocodiles “displaying dangerous behaviour are targeted for removal”.

Signs at the park have been installed, warning visitors of the possible danger lurking in the lake.

The official said people should expect crocodiles in all North Queensland waterways and should stay away from croc traps.

The BIG4 resort, which is popular with families and petfriendly, has three lakes stocked with barramundi.

BIG4 Rollingstone declined to comment on the crocodile trap.

The department is targeting a number of “problem crocodiles” around Townsville and Ingham.

It is targeting a crocodile at Bluewater for removal, which was declared a problem on July 19.

A crocodile was also reported at Bluewater on August 6.

Another two crocodiles deemed problematic are being targeted in Ingham: one seen at Marina Parade and another at Blackrock Rd.
