Healthy reality check might not be so bad

- with Steve Price steve.price@townsvillebulletin.com.au

I COULD have a little problem.

It’s always a rather testing situation talking about something you’re not an expert in, which is most things in my case.

On this occasion it’s health, and yes I guess it is the most important conversation we can have, because without it, life is not so flash. Tonight at the magnificent Pavilion at the Ville (with their new flashing lights) we have the My Health For Life healthy lifestyle program, funded by the Queensland Government, and nothing to do with the health of their cross-river bridge.

This is actually for us too. Setting health goals into manageable packages they say, maybe for me it’s doing base camp, winning Ninja and riding bulls by Friday arvo. That’s riding bull, I already “write” it!

This will be fun, and they are all experts ... except one. One of the many subjects is outside exercise, and should we do more, like Asian countries do with their unique forms, maybe Tai Chilligoe out west and here, say at Mt St John, Poolates.

There are many thong camps in parks throughout the city (not boot camps, sounds American) and lovely Cheryl who does her yoga (from Star Wars remember, I’m all over it eh) down at Garrabarra, Jezzine.

So we do have a bit, but let’s do more, how about as the footy’s not all that sensational at the moment, at the new stadium let’s have “Cowboys Calisthenics”!

I reckon it’ll be huge, injuries would be down, everyone wins, and not a ref needed. So I’m probably going to be tossed, like a green salad, out tonight, but who knows, as Mark Twain said (and this was many Tri Fests ago)

THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP YOUR HEALTH IS TO EAT WHAT YOU DON’T WANT, DRINK WHAT YOU DON’T LIKE, AND DO WHAT YOU’D RATHER NOT!

This of course is not the case, health food manufacturers do actually know what the taste of fruit is nowadays.

And as for low-carb beer, well, what more could one want. In beer there is freedom, in wine there is health, in cognac there is power, in water there is bacteria … oh dear, there maybe a problem tonight after all. Oh well, I will stand up and say quite loudly “Happiness is the highest form of health” with thanks to dear Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama. Yes I nicked it, great saying eh?

This Saturday is the 10th birthday of the wonderful turtle hospital, we’ll be there from 9.30am celebrating these glorious creatures who call our beaches home.

I love them, and even more so love that we have such caring people that look after them.

Saturday you can meet Arthur the turtle at Reef HQ, and on Monday morning at

10.45 at Freedom Beach, we send him home.

I’ll have to ask my mate Uncle Russel Butler what the local First Australian word for turtle is, and that’s what we name the beach.

At the moment, surely we can do better, I’ve seen the sign, its named Motorised Craft Prohibited.

Happy Turtle Days.
