Zorko aims to create club history
AFL: Brisbane’s remarkable resurgence can reach historic heights on Sunday, when a win over Richmond would ensure the merged club’s first minor premiership since Fitzroy finished on top in 1913.
Not even the Lions’ great triple-premiership sides of 20012003 managed the feat, a fact captain Dayne Zorko is well aware of.
Securing the minor premiership will require another historic achievement given the Tigers have beaten Brisbane in their past 12 clashes and the Lions haven’t won at the MCG since 2014.
“It (minor premiership) is not something we’ll be solely focused on, but what an exciting achievement if we’re able to get the win,” Zorko said yesterday.
“It’s another great opportunity and no bigger task; we’ve broken hoodoos all year and we’ll set out to do the same this weekend.”
Wooden spooners in 2017 and 15th last season with just five wins, Brisbane have won their past nine games and 16 overall in 2019 to emerge as ladder leaders and the form side heading toward the finals.
Zorko, in his first full year of captaincy, said the maturity of a young group to avoid complacency and distractions along the way had impressed him.
“(Guys aged) 20, 21, 22, the normal people (that age) would be going out having fun so we need to implement ways of not going out but make the environment as fun as possible,” Zorko said.
“Whether we’ve been complacent or happy with that (big wins in the past) ... this time it’s a real mature ‘get back to work’ attitude.” — Murray Wenzel
