Barlow back as Boomers eye US
BASKETBALL: Veteran David Barlow has been called into the Australianworld Cup squad to replace NBA forward Jonah Bolden.
The 35-year-old Melbourne United power forward has represented Australia at two Olympic Games and was a member of the Boomers squad for the World Cup qualifiers last year.
Barlow received his call-up after Bolden withdrew at the weekend citing personal reasons, just hours after impressing in the Boomers’ bounceback win over Canada in Perth.
Barlow will join the Boomers today, a day before they take on theunited States in the first of two games in Melbourne which lead into the World month.
“After reflecting on the needs of the group, it became evident that David’s skill set complements the group nicely,” Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis said.
“He brings strength and versatility at the defensive end, Cup in China next has great international experience and is committed to doing whatever is required for team success.
“David’s basketball IQ and previous experience in the system will allow him to slot in quickly with the team.”
Barlow was determined to make the most of his surprise call-up. “I’m unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to represent my country in the upcomingworld Cup,” he said.
“I look forward to doing whatever is asked of me in order to help the teamwin.”
Meanwhile, Team USA has lost another star with Houston Rocket PJ Tucker withdrawing yesterday after suffering an ankle injury. — John Salvado
