Crypto cash world conference for city

TOWNSVILLE’S early acceptance of cryptocurrency is being rewarded with the city selected to host an Australian-first conference of global leaders in Bitcoin Cash on September 4-5.

The Bitcoin Cash City Conference is being brought to the city by a group of local merchants who use the cryptocurrency, led by Noel Lovisa, CEO of local software company Code Valley, and Hayden Otto, CEO of Townsville-based Bitcoinbch.com which is dedicated to the adoption of the electronic cash system.

About 80 businesses from coffee shops and hotels to tour operators and laundry services accept the electronic currency in Townsville.

Mr Lovisa said the city had the highest per capita merchant adoption of Bitcoin Cash in the world.

“The North Queensland Bitcoin Cash Merchants’ Group leveraged that to propose a Bitcoin Cash City Conference in Townsville,” Mr Lovisa said.

“We’ve got the 20 top Bitcoin Cash speakers in the world coming.”

Mr Lovisa said the number one speaker was Amaury Séchet who split Bitcoin Cash from the original Bitcoin group last year and wrote the code for the original Bitcoin Cash client.

Mr Lovisa said he adopted Bitcoin initially to solve a problem for Code Valley’s software development project.

“We’ve created a new technology for producing software by combining tiny fragments (of software code) from around the world,” he said.

“I had to find a way to pay, for example, 20 cents to somebody in South Africa. I wanted to operate in 150 countries with 150 currencies.

“So I became a very big fan of Bitcoin in the very early stages, but Bitcoin got converted into a settlement system with high fees and congestion, and became no longer suitable for distributed coding.

“Since Bitcoin Cash split off from Bitcoin it has been widely adopted and I believe it will eclipse Bitcoin. Bitcoin Cash is going to be the world’s number one cryptocurrency.”

Mr Otto said Bitcoin Cash was so popular in Townsville, conference delegates would be able to use it pay for everything they their stay.

“You can get all your food and drink, your accommodation and even pay for your laundry with Bitcoin Cash,” he said.

“Merchants are taking up Bitcoin Cash because it competes with Visa and Mastercard, eliminating fees and giving them an extra 3 per cent on all payments.”

Mr Otto said the conference presented a unique opportunity for people to discover the potential of the cryptocurrency.
