Cowboys in the pink for tribute to women

- TRENT SLATTER

JAKE Clifford doesn’t usually wear pink, but the Cowboys halfback says that fashion choice is the least he can do as the club celebrates Women in League round.

The Cowboys will wear special pink jerseys against the Panthers at 1300SMILES Stadium tomorrow night to pay tribute to the influential women in each player’s life.

Tully Tigers junior Clifford had to make the 280km round trip up the Bruce Highway to Cairns as often as three times a week for training and games with his mum taking on the driving duties.

Clifford’s family also moved to Townsville when he signed with the Cowboys in 2016.

“What my mum’s done for me throughout my whole career, I don’t know how I could ever repay her with all the sacrifices and travel she’s done to support me and with my partner now too,” Clifford said.

“I couldn’t even put a number to it (the amount of travel they did). Living in Tully and travelling to Cairns three times a week for training. If dad didn’t take us then mum was there to take me as well.

“What they’ve done for probably all the boys playing rugby league all over the world — it’s a great weekend of recognition for them.”

Winger Kyle Feldt also paid tribute to his mum’s role in his rugby league career and said the Cowboys were keen to put on a show in their pink jerseys.

“Mum’s the main woman in my life. I think for a lot of footy players your mothers do sacrifice a lot for you growing up,” Felt said.

“I think real men wear pink and I really like wearing these jerseys. It’s a big part of our game and we’re really excited to get out this week.”
