Fair proves feast of job-winning advice

- TONY RAGGATT

IF you want that job, you need to show your prospective boss why you are the right person for the position, says North Queensland employment facilitator John Hall.

Mr Hall was commenting after running a successful Jobs Fair in Townsville last month for the Department of Employment. The event at Townsville Stadium attracted 1372 jobseekers and 52 exhibitors offering 931 jobs, and looks like being repeated.

“To be successful in today’s jobs markets, jobseekers need to show employers why they are the right person for the job,” Mr Hall said.

“The best way to do that is to look in the right places for the jobs that suit you, have a quality resume, and be well prepared for the interview.”

Mr Hill said looking for a job required activities including looking at online advertising sites such as Seek and company websites, developing personal networks and registering with jobactive and other employment service providers, as well as recruitment and labour hire companies.

“It is important to have a high-quality resume adapted to the particular job, to dress appropriately and to practise interviewing,” Mr Hall said.

He said there was excellent advice about job search, resume writing and interview skills available online through sites such as whatsnext.employment.gov.au.

On the Jobs Fair, Mr Hall said the 52 exhibitors averaged 60 detailed discussions with potential employees. He said jobseekers provided feedback indicating that the highlights for them were the 931 jobs being advertised, the ability for direct contact with employers, and Jobs Fair workshops.

Queensland Health provided detailed advice to more than 100 participants on how to access its online application processes, while JBS, Defence Force Recruiting, Rehab Management and Jade Recruitment fielded in excess of 100 inquiries.

Mr Hall said more than 100 people participated in resume, interview and application workshops practice sessions.

He said employers were finalising their recruitment processes.

Mental health and disability support services provider Open Minds was following up on interviews to fill 15 vacancies and Centacare had employed one person.

Townsville Taxis had employed two people and Jade Recruitment had placed two people in work. the job and
