Morgo rejects talk of rift with Greeny

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

COWBOYS director of football Peter Parr believes Paul Green and Michael Morgan are the pairing to lead the club into a new era.

With the arrival of the North Queensland Stadium next season, and the impending arrival of a new Cowboys headquarters and “centre of excellence” training facility in future seasons, Parr said it feels like the dawn of a new era.

And despite media reports of a rift forming between the pairing, Parr wants Green and Morgan at the helm of the ship.

Green and Morgan’s relationship has come under the spotlight after News Corp revealed the pair had a heated discussion at a club function after the hefty loss to the Knights just over a week ago.

The suggestion was Morgan had believed Green was questioning his team leadership.

But the Cowboys captain came out firing at the speculation yesterday suggesting the conversation had been taken out of context.

“Myself and Greeny have many discussions about many things and someone may have heard something or misinterpreted something they thought had something to it,” Morgan said. “My relationship with Greeny is very good.

“It wasn’t at all (about my leadership). What part of the discussion they took out of it, I am not sure.

“What Greeny and I discuss is between us, and for it to be taken the way it was, it is false.”

Parr was similarly on the front foot when questioned by the Townsville Bulletin about the rising speculation, and suggested it had been given “too much airtime”.

The Cowboys football boss, who has been with the club for 18 years, believes Green is the one to lead the club in 2020 with his captain beside him.

“I think everybody is so quick to judge in the modern world. I think a coach and a captain are entitled to have any conversation they like whether it be good, bad or indifferent,” he said.

“It is an important relationship and they both need to have an opinion on different things and that is not always going to be the same.

“It has got more airplay than it should have got. Everything I see between those two is nothing but cordial and nothing but a positive relationship, so I see no problem in it.”

Morgan also backed the embattled coach to be the man for the job next season and beyond despite the club on the eve of closing out a secondstraight season from hell.

“I definitely do. Because of the season we have had, those questions get thrown out there by other people but it is certainly not in-house,” he said.

“When there is something to talk about the Cowboys this year, it has often been negative. But I certainly think Greeny is the right coach to turn us around next year.”
