Farewell to part of history

-

AHEAD of tonight’s final match at 13000SMILES Stadium, the Cowboys have played 303 games at the venue.

During that time, stretching back to their first-ever game in 1995, they have had 155 wins, 146 losses and two draws.

But those numbers don’t compare with the countless memories their fans will be left with when the siren sounds for the last time tonight, bringing an end to the Cowboys’ 25-season association with the ground which has also been called Stockland Stadium, Malanda Stadium and Dairy Farmers Stadium. Any tinge of sadness associated with saying goodbye to a venue which has been the scene of such amazing entertainment over such a long period will not last long.

What tonight’s game signals is that we are in the final stretch before the Cowboys’ new home — North Queensland Stadium — is unveiled.

The ground is starting to take shape with a large section of the roofing structure installed. It is becoming a significant feature on the Townsville CBD skyline.

The key to the new stadium’s success will be diversity of users.

The venue is off to a good start with an Elton John concert to be its first major event and news that it will also host the opening ceremony for next year’s North Queensland Games.

It has also been linked to major rugby union matches and a women’s State of Origin game in its first year.

There are also plans to use the facilities in the western grandstand for functions ranging from corporate dinners to weddings.

The more people that get to use the stadium the better.

Before that, however, we have to say goodbye to the old stadium.

Hopefully, after tonight those stats will read: 304 games, 156 wins, 146 losses and two draws.

Thanks for the memories.
