Awards focus on empowering women

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

EMPOWERING women will be in the spotlight this Friday at the third Townsville Business Women’s Awards.

The award features four categories honouring the achievements of hardworking women in business and shining a light on their outstanding contribution to society. Co-ordinated by the Townsville Business Women’s Circle, committee president Megan Colwell says the Empowering Women Award category was an important reminder to women of their influence.

“Women are notoriously known for not seeing themselves as others see them and the awards recognise the achievements of women in businesses and celebrates their successes,” she said.

“The Empowering Women Award, in particular, is dedicated to acknowledge women who have gone above and beyond, and used their leadership positions to empower others.”

Five Start Fitness owner and founder Lyndsey Goriss is one of three finalists for the award.

The fitness coach started her business seven years ago and has built a 600-strong client base, mentoring and motivating men and women to reach their health and life goals.

Ms Goriss said to be nominated alongside other talented people was a way of women empowering each other by recognising positive female role models.

“Empowering women helps in creating self-worth, confidence, freedom and purpose,” she says.

“I am a big believer in inspiring our mothers, daughters, granddaughters and the next generation because it is no longer a man’s world.”
