World record bid to aid mental health

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

IT is your opportunity to become a world record holder while shining a light on bringing mental health out of the shadows to make it “visible” in North Queensland.

A new world record for the most people wearing high-vis will be attempted to honour the dark times Townsville residents have endured since the devastating floods in February.

It has been two months in the making but it was announced today that the Guinness World Record attempt will be made on World Mental Health Day, October 10, at Bunnings Idalia.

Herbert MP Phillip Thompson, who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, said it was fundamental that Townsville came out to break the stigma behind mental health issues.

“It is a great event and there is nothing more important than someone having positive mental health,” he said.

Townsville Deputy Mayor Les Walker highlighted the significance of the event for Townsville to recognise the resilience of residents who were still struggling to rebuild their homes and lives.

“Mental health is an issue in all societies and since the monsoon event we have had an escalated number identified needing assistance with mental health issues,” he said. “We get to come together in the same neck of the woods that went under and let them know we haven’t forgotten.”

Mental Health Australia’s Lachlan Searle encouraged the whole city to give the record a good try.

“This is a good excuse to come together and be a world record holder.”

Activities on the day include circus performers, a rock climbing wall, hula hoop making, popcorn snow cones, vest decorating and a free sausage sizzle. The official count will take place at 6pm.
