Tom hits heights with Castle Hill

- MATT TAYLOR

IT’S arguably Townsville’s most iconic location, but Castle Hill also serves a very important role in keeping the community happy, healthy and active.

Filled with walkers, runners and cyclists every morning and afternoon, the area is overcome by fitness fanatics of all shapes and sizes making the effort to live a healthier lifestyle.

For Railway Estate resident Tom Tewhaiti, who has lived in Townsville for seven years, the location is the best thing the city has to offer.

And he’s encouraging other residents to get out and enjoy the natural surrounds.

“Castle Hill is the best thing about the city from my perspective,” he said.

“It’s good cardio exercise, you can either walk up or run up, and run down or walk down. (Exercise is) just something nice to do that I enjoy, and this is always here, it’s a free gym.”

Tom can be found on the tracks two or three times a week, usually walking up before running back down.

The office worker says it’s an important part of his routine, and plays a vital role in his positive mental health and getting out from behind the desk.

His best advice for anyone who wants to make the change in their life is to start small and build up.

“Walk up the road, try that instead of the goat tracks, and just do what you can. You can always drive halfway up and just do half,” he said.

“You can choose your own path every time you do it, up the goat track or up the road, even though I’ve done it a thousand times gets boring.

“I think it just needs to be a habit and once it is it’s easy, even just doing it once a week can become a habit and then doing it twice or three times is even better.”

The has launched a six-week campaign, shining a light on our city’s best personal trainers, dietitians and health experts and offering advice on how to kick the kilos.
