Woman dies in collision

- JACOB MILEY

A HORRIFIC collision has claimed the life of a woman, marking the 10th death on Townsville’s roads this year.

Emergency services rushed to the accident between a black Volkswagen Amarok and a Subaru at the intersection of Woolcock and Weston streets at Mount Louisa just past 7.30am yesterday.

A woman, 62, who was driving the Subaru, suffered critical injuries and could not be revived at the scene.

Townsville forensic crash unit acting Sergeant Mark Knopjes said investigations were under way, however, speeding did not appear to have been a factor.

“We’ve got a dual cab black four-wheel-drive that was … turning right into Weston St, and at the time the vehicle has collided with a Subaru vehicle,” Sgt Knopjes said at the scene yesterday.

“It’s still very early at this stage (in the investigation), we are still trying to ascertain some versions as to what’s happened.

“We’ve got a large amount of witnesses who have come forward, so we’re also trying to source out all the witness versions.”

The driver of the ute, 19, was taken to Townsville Hospital for shock but has since been released.

The Subaru was left smashed and badly damaged while the ute blocked the inbound lane of Woolcock St.

A section of the street was closed to motorists for much of the morning as police carried out their initial investigations.

There have now been 35 road deaths in the northern region this year, and 10 in Townsville.

Sgt Knopjes said it was a dreadful scene for all emergency services to attend.

“The main thing we keep pushing is for all motorists to take their time on the roads and don’t be in a hurry, it’s not worth it at the end,” he said.

Investigators are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the accident or have dashcam footage to contact police.
