Life changer for flood victim A mindset fit to believe in

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

WHEN Tara Henderson made the decision to get fit, it wasn’t only for her physical health but also for her mental wellbeing.

The 23-year-old said she experienced tough times after the floods seven months ago and joining a fitness group gave her a new positive outlook on life.

“I can’t stress enough how exercising has helped my mental health,” she said.

“Everyone has been through the floods this year and I was affected and it affected my work and I lost my job.

“So having the support system at the gym not just for fitness but for everything in my life, I would go there and work it out and sweat it out and work off that stress from living.

“Sometimes going and training was the only thing that made me feel good.”

From pain she gained a healthier body and a happier mind and says she is now at the peak of her physical performance.

“The goal was never to lose weight but to feel more confident in myself,” Ms Henderson said.

“I have more energy, I can do so much more and I am so much more positive in myself.

“I know it doesn’t sound like much but I have so much muscle now and when I started I was using 4kg baby weights and now I’m using 12.5kg.”

The graphic designer adds that her diet has played a big role in her transformation, abiding by a healthy meal plan and allowing herself some treats during the week.

“When I first started the meal plan I was losing 1kg a week but I made sure I didn’t starve myself. I eat wholesome proteins and meats,” she said.

Ms Henderson’s advice to anyone out there thinking about taking the first step to a new life is to have a positive mindset and just believe in yourself.

“Commitment and consistency is the key and it really helps if you are conscious about doing it even if you think you can’t do it,” she said.
