NEWEST SCHOOL GROWING FAST

- CHRIS LEES

TOWNSVILLE’S only democratic school will almost double its student numbers next year.

Enkindle Village School opened in February this year with 17 students from Prep to Year 3.

It is based at the James Cook University campus.

Principal Kiri Pearce said next year the school would expand to Year 4 and have about 30 students attending.

“We have had lots of interest in the school, especially from parents who see the benefit of having more choice in education in Townsville,” she said.

“Current parents and students are enjoying the variety at Enkindle and are seeing the benefits of students having a choice and voice in their learning.

“Students are engaged and enthusiastic and are enjoying the connections to their wider community.”

Ms Pearce said opening a new school was “no mean feat” and the first six months had been challenging but extremely rewarding.

“The first six months since Enkindle opened has been an incredible experience in which we have seen the vision for Enkindle come to life, including our partnership with James Cook University and the development of a democratic curriculum with a focus on student-directed, hands-on learning,” she said.

Townsville’s newest school is based on the philosophy of liberty, autonomy, joy, connection and innovation.

“Students are actively involved in the design of their learning and are encouraged to find the passions that fuel their love of learning,” Ms Pearce said.
