Mums’ fitness solution

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

BUSY mums often find it hard to squeeze in their daily exercise but it is important for them to stay fit and active.

Kim Ernst started Embrace Fitness Solutions to allow mums the freedom to exercise with their bubs and said it was essential mothers focused on their fitness needs.

“I think working mums put their own needs last and they need to understand that by doing that you’re not giving your best to your family or to your job,” she said.

The mother of three young children said it was crucial to keep up a fitness schedule after giving birth to pave the way for their children to develop healthy habits.

“Mums need to understand the importance of looking after themselves and showing their kids how to stay healthy so they learn from your example,” Ms Ernst said.

“Kids do what you do, so you can tell them to do something but they aren’t going to do it until they see you do it.”

Ms Ernst recommends mums find a fitness or sporting group to keep them motivated and physically active in the long-term.

“Mums need to find something they love doing and to be part of a community,” she said.

“If you love what you do, you will go on those days when you don’t feel like it because you have people who will miss you when you are not there and who are going to check in with you.” It is also important for expecting mums to stay active after they fall pregnant.

“There is no reason to stop everything when you fall pregnant. You can still exercise with some modifications because you are going to need that continued fitness for the labour,” she said. “Exercise is important for the baby to stay healthy and well during the pregnancy.”

Ms Ernst said that mums may not have the time to visit the gym every day but that it was important to keep up their fitness routine from their home.
