Wake me up from ‘woke’

- RITA PANAHI

IT’S time. I can no longer live a lie. I am formally changing my pronouns.

From here on I would like to be referred to as “your majesty”, “queen of Sheba” or “Persian princess”.

It’s how I self-identify and I expect my wishes to be respected as I grapple with my new-found royal status.

In this woke era of non-binary gender fluidity where a bloke with a full beard and functioning penis can call herself a woman and be recognised as such on official documents such as birth certificates, I see no issue with coming out as a potentate.

Any troglodytes who mock or disregard my self-identification are nothing more than bigots standing in the way of social justice and progress.

With the passage of the Racial and Religious Tolerance Amendment Bill 2019, currently before the Victorian parliament, those who deliberately misgender or mock my gender identity will be in breach of the law and, god willing, will be looking at a six-month stint behind bars.

Last weekend British singer Sam Smith came out as a plural. He posted on social media: “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to change my pronouns to THEY/THEM.”

On Instagram he gave a longer but no less confused explanation: “I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non-binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open.”

He also posted links to 15 “activists and leaders of the non-binary/trans community” for those who had questions.

As you would expect the reaction from the media was fawning with mainstream publications mangling the English language to accommodate Smith’s pronouncement.

From the BBC to Pink News, the pronouns he/him/his were replaced by they/them. One publication that failed to duly comply was Associated Press, which published a news story that “misgendered” Smith by referring to him as him.

Cue the howls of outrage. One activist journalist penned a piece for the Tampa Bay Times with the headline: “AP’S transphobic Sam Smith story exposes journalism’s failings”.

“As a queer, non-binary journalist, I was thrilled – to see another highprofile person similar to me and in anticipation of the education and conversations on gender this would encourage. What later came across the wires from the Associated Press chilled my blood,” wrote Ashley Dye.

He/she/they railed against copy that “failed to educate cisgender readers”.

Well it didn’t take long for AP to fall into line with the rest of the “so woke they’re broke” media.

Their report was updated with all references to gender removed and this correction added: “This story has been corrected throughout to reflect Sam Smith’s pronouns.”

Earlier this week the MerriamWebster dictionary also amended the definition of “they” to include a nonbinary pronoun.

There have been a few brave souls who have challenged the latest celebrity vanity project, among them acclaimed British writer Douglas Murray whose new book The Madness of Crowds looks at modern derangement in matters of gender, race and identity.

Murray wrote a blistering piece on Smith’s vacuous, woke exhibitionism: “The dementing whirlwinds of our time have many oddities. But among them is the fact that in the face of such demands, so few people are willing to do anything but nod and comply. Perhaps it requires somebody who is gay to say this, but I call ‘enough’. It is so tedious, boring and unproductive, this endless game of going on about sexuality and gender … The commissars of wokeness keep missing something. Which is that we have arrived at equality already. And what we are in now just feels like some horrible overcorrection.”

Brendan O’neill also railed against the new PC demands: “Not content with committing crimes against music, now Sam Smith is committing crimes against grammar.”

If you think there is no harm to this lunacy, then look at what happens to those who challenge the excesses of the trans agenda. From a rape crisis centre (Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter) having its funding cut for not allowing biological males into their premises; to male sex offenders (Karen White) who identify as female being sent to a female prison; to female beauticians losing their livelihoods for not wanting to touch the male genitalia of trans activists (Jessica Yaniv) who identify as female; to local efforts to turn public bathrooms into gender neutral spaces.

AND WHAT WE ARE IN NOW JUST FEELS LIKE SOME HORRIBLE OVERCORRECTION. DOUGLAS MURRAY
