Molo feels right at home

- TRENT SLATTER

COWBOYS prop Francis Molo says he now feels like he belongs in the NRL as he helps lead North Queensland’s forward pack into a new era next season.

The Cowboys have lost more than 500 games of firstgrade experience following the departures of veterans Matt Scott and Scott Bolton, but they have some excellent forwards coming through the ranks including Molo.

Molo received the coach’s award at Wednesday’s presentation dinner after playing all 24 games for the Cowboys this season and averaging a careerhigh 71 metres off the bench.

The 24-year-old had only played 13 NRL games prior to this season, but he has made the most of every opportunity after earning a Cowboys deal through the Townsville Blackhawks in 2017.

Molo said the show of faith from Cowboys coach Paul Green had done wonders for his confidence as he looks to force his way into the starting side for next season and beyond.

“I’ve worked hard week-in, week-out with a quality bunch of players (but) I didn’t expect to win any award so it means a lot,” Molo said.

“Just to get that opportunity in first grade and resurrect my career. It’s been a tough couple of years, but to come up to a quality club with a good bunch of boys – I’m just really grateful to be honest.

“I’m keen to get bigger and better … and hopefully get into that starting role.”

Backrower Shane Wright is also pumped for what lies ahead for the Cowboys in 2020 after a breakthrough season that saw him earn the club’s rookie of the year honour.

The Proserpine junior didn’t think he was still eligible after playing three games over the past two seasons, but Wright’s form was undeniable as he cemented his place in the starting side.

The 23-year-old averaged 84 running metres and 37 tackles in his 10 games as a starter and Wright said he was determined to keep building on those performances.

“I only played a handful of games and coming off the bench so you get a bit nervous, but once I got a few starting games and played some big minutes it starts to become a little bit easier,” he said.

“‘Boltsy’ and ‘Thumper’ (Scott) are moving on, but we’ve got a good crew of younger forwards and I’m one of them so I’ve got to get into preseason and turn up ready.”

IT’S BEEN A TOUGH COUPLE OF YEARS … I’M JUST REALLY GRATEFUL TO BE HONEST.
