- JACOB MILEY jacob.miley1@news.com.au

A MAN who smashed through the rear doors of a North Queensland police station allegedly armed with a knife before being shot by officers has undergone emergency surgery.

The Bowen man, 35, was flown to Townsville Hospital

The lead-up to what occurred, and the man’s state of mind, is now being investigated.

“That is all still subject to review and we are progressing some inquiries with that to establish the person’s frame of mind and their motivation for being here. That will all be subject to the investigation,” Supt Haughton said.

He said the officers were in “good spirits”.

Anyone who was in Bowen CBD and has dashcam footage is urged to contact police.

A TRIP to this weekend’s Greek Fest Glendi will be even sweeter, with Townsville Bulletin readers able to indulge in free honey puffs and churros.

By cutting out the exclusive coupons inside tomorrow’s newspaper, you’ll receive a free sweet treat when you head along to the two-day festival.

Dorothy Paschalis will be one of 30 cooks crafting honey puffs from hundreds of kilograms of flour for the masses at this weekend’s Greek Fest Glendi.

Ms Paschalis has been part of the Townsville Greek community for 50 years and looks forward to cooking honey puffs at the event every year.

“I love cooking everything, especially pastries,” she said.

“Everybody loves honey puffs and while people want them, we will just keep making them.”

Born in Cyprus in 1939, Ms Paschalis has been a volunteer for every Greek festival since 1999 and said it had taken years of practice to craft the perfect honey puff. “It is quite an art,” she said. “You have to pick it up with your hands and squeeze it through your fingers and it has to be the right size.”

Ms Paschalis loves the inclusive vibe of the Greek festival and is proud that she still owns the apron from her very first festival, which she has worn every year since.
