Etch a place in sports history
COWBOYS fans have the opportunity to etch their name in history alongside some of the club’s biggest heroes.
In what is a sporting first in Australia, the Cowboys will line the entry to the state-ofthe-art North Queensland Stadium with a series of commemorative pavers dubbed the “Captain’s Walk”.
The 500sq m installation will include special pavers carrying the Cowboys logo and the names of all of the club’s past captains, including inaugural leader Laurie Spina and premiership-winning duo Matt Scott and Johnathan Thurston.
Fans also have the opportunity to have their own specialised paver as part of the walk, for a donation of $1500 to the project.
The donation, which will be tax deductible for individuals, will assist in the building of the Cowboys Community, Training & High Performance Centre, which will be located adjacent to the stadium.
Club chief executive officer Jeff Reibel said it was an important initiative to maintain the bond between the community and the home of the Cowboys.
“You look at where we are at the moment and the ownership the people of North Queensland have of (1300SMILES Stadium),” he said. “You don’t run into anybody that hasn’t either laid the turf, donated some goods and services or donated their time to the stadium.”
Scott said it was a proud moment for him, being part of the initiative, and encouraged fans to act quickly to get their name alongside their heroes.
“It is really special, you don’t get things like this happen too often,” he said.
“I am hugely excited for it to be up and running and to come watch the boys play here next year, to come and see my name as part of the fabric of the stadium and something as permanent as a walkway – it is very exciting.”
There will be 500 specialised pavers up for grabs with all orders to be in before November 14 to ensure construction on time for the stadium opening in February. To organise your own piece of history head online to cow boys.com.au/captains-walk
