INNOVATION IN TEACHING RECOGNISED
TOWNSVILLE’S Stanton Lodge has been recognised twice in a week for its excellent work with at-risk students, with the overall program and a foundation teacher both nominated for prestigious awards.
Program head Kevin Butler has been named as a finalist for the Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX Awards for Innovation in Teaching, a nod to his work in teaching children about mindfulness, how the brain works and neuroplasticity.
Stanton Lodge has also been selected as one of four State Government finalists in the Giving all our Children a Great Start category of the 2019 Premier’s Awards for Excellence.
“It’s recognition for the whole school, for the work that we’re doing and the outcomes we’re achieving for our students, and most importantly recognition of the students’ achievements,” Mr Butler said.
Stanton Lodge was established about six years ago to work with students who show signs of behavioural or emotional issues in school.
“The best way to describe what we do is we teach how the brain works, what it actually does and that it is actually working, and teach how to work with the brain to control emotions better, to have better relationships, to problem-solve better, a whole range of things with regards to emotional intelligence and resilience,” Mr Butler said.
Winners of the TEACHX awards will be revealed on October 24 and the Premier’s Awards for Excellence will be announced in November 6. Brisbane on
