Emotions mixed in Fiji defeat

- DEAN RITCHIE

AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister’s XIII women’s centre Patricia Raikadroka scored three tries yesterday to kill off the challenge of her native Fiji – and it came with “mixed emotions”.

Raikadroka’s hat-trick enabled the Australians to record a tough 22-14 win against a spirited Fiji at Suva’s ANZ National Stadium.

Fiji led for most of the game but the Aussies – led by Raikadroka – finished strongly to record a robust victory.

“It is very special and to be here at home in Fiji is another momentous occasion,” Raikadroka said. “Definitely it was mixed emotions this week, it was very emotional for me. But there was lots of praying and lots of motivation from the girls around me. They kept me ground and helped me settle my nerves.

“My dad and his family live here in Suva but sometime he works off island in other villages. I’m not sure if he is here tonight but my cousins should be here.

“Mum is Fijian, we’re from the north island, but she is back in Australia working hard as always but she sent lots of love before I got here.”

Australian coach Brad Donald praised Raikadroka’s performance.

“It would have been quite difficult for her,” Donald said. “She was in our development program and had a goal to play for Australia.

“She also has heritage here in Fiji and family and she has played for Fiji. That just shows the strength of international rugby league.”

Raikadroka actually scored twice for Fiji in a Test against PNG in June.

Fiji was brave yesterday – a team of villagers that almost bowled over the hot favourites.
