Fighting to help teens battle demons

- TESS IKONOMOU tess.ikonomou@news.com.au

IT was Danielle Cooper’s quick thinking that saved the life of her friend.

In October last year, the teenager took away the items her friend was planning to use to end his life, and reassured him she was there for him.

Danielle said he sadly died by suicide this year, but it was his wish that her courage be recognised through a Pride of Australia nomination, with his friends writing in on his behalf.

“He was my best mate. I tried everything and to support him through it,” she said.

“It’s really hard, you don’t expect something like this to happen.”

This is the fourth friend Danielle has lost to poor mental health, the devastating experiences spurring her on to help others.

“It’s affected me very badly, it’s shocked me pretty badly,” she said. “His brother messaged me saying he (her friend) had taken his life.

“I didn’t really believe him at first, it was still raw to even think about.”

Danielle, a high school student, said her friend’s death had placed her firmly on the path of fighting to help other teenagers battling with mental health issues.

“I’ve become really passionate about mental health,” she said.

“I think it’s a very dark subject for anyone to talk about.

“Since he’s passed away, I now want to spread awareness about battling with a mental illness.

“It’s OK to speak up and there’s always people there to support you.

“I was thinking about being a counsellor and speaking to young people who are dealing with a mental illness.”

The 18-year-old said while organisations such as headspace did a good job of supporting young people, they needed to be supported in how they could reach out for help and in managing their own barriers.

Now in their 15th year, the Pride of Australia awards seek to unearth and honour ordinary Australians who make an extraordinary contribution to communities.

News Corp Australia, publisher of the Townsville Bulletin, is partnering with Australia Post and Seven News to stage the 2019 awards.

Nominations are open at prideofaustralia.com.au until October 21.
