Morrison presents ministerial changes

- CLARE ARMSTRONG

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison unveiled his new-look ministry yesterday revealing Darren Chester’s elevation to Cabinet was the first time Veterans Affairs has been counted among those senior roles since 1993.

Mr Chester – who also overseas the Defence Personnel portfolio – was one of several MPS handed a promotion after Barnaby Joyce failed to topple Deputy Prime Minister Michael Mccormack.

New Nationals deputy leader David Littleproud has Agriculture as well as the Drought and Emergency Management portfolios.

His Water Resources responsibilities were handed to Queensland MP Keith Pitt, who was also given Resources and Northern Australia.

Calare MP Andrew Gee was promoted to Regional Education and Decentralisation Minister, and will also assist the Minister for Trade and Investment Simon Birmingham.

His NSW colleague, Parkes MP Mark Coulton, will remain Local Government Minister and adds Regional Health and Regional Communications to his responsibilities.

Capricornia MP Michelle Landry will continue as Assistant Minister for Children and Family, and will also serve as Assistant Minister for Northern Australia.

Mr Gee, Mr Coulton and Ms Landry walked side-byside with Mr Mccormack as they entered the party room meeting for the leadership vote on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Queenslander Kevin Hogan will be promoted to Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr Morrison thanked outgoing minister Bridget McKenzie and Matt Canavan.

Mr Canavan resigned from Cabinet to support Mr Joyce’s failed leadership bid.
