MORE FLOODING ON THE CARDS

- MICHAEL THOMPSON, KEAGAN ELDER

DRIVERS are being urged to take extra care on the region’s roads after one family had a lucky escape from floodwater yesterday.

Today flooding is expected in some areas, including Greta Rd in Oak Valley where yesterday a woman driving a car with two children inside had a lucky escape after trying to drive through floodwater, which cut the car’s engine out.

Firefighters needed to push the car out of the water, which a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said was about 20cm deep. She said the driver attempted to drive through water running over the road before the car cut out.

The woman and children were rescued about 10am.

Today up to 70mm of rain could fall on Townsville thanks to Cyclone Esther, which has brought converging winds to the Townsville region and extra rainfall along with them.

The Burdekin is also likely to get 50-80mm and Ingham could get up to 40mm, after Townsville received more than 60mm yesterday.

“There’ll be a higher chance of rain over the next few days because of Cyclone Esther, which is pulling a bit of extra wind to the Townsville area,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rose Hoff said. Bluewater resident Brooke Pohlmann felt safer bringing her son Ryley to The Strand for a play after heavy rain had snakes on the move.

Cheryl Acford, of Bluewater, opted to bring her large pet pig Opal inside with all the rain. She said rain had filled Opal’s specially built run with mud.
