Froling fires up WNBL
TOWNSVILLE’S Keely Froling has been hit with a breach notice by the WNBL after criticising the organisation for their handling of an incident she was involved in last weekend.
During the second semifinal against the Melbourne Boomers on Sunday, Froling, who plays for the Canberra Capitals, had a lay-up attempt rejected by Stella Beck.
As she went to get back on the court, Froling got in a tangle of bodies.
One of Froling’s arms appeared to accidentally contact the face of Melbourne guard Sophie Cunningham, which didn’t please the American import.
Cunningham lashed out and shoved Froling in the face as the referee stepped in to separate the two teams.
The WNBL perceived Cunningham’s actions to be “careless, low impact and high contact” and hit her with only a $250 fine due to an early guilty plea.
Froling wasn’t impressed with the WNBL’S handling of the incident and took to social media to vent her frustrations.
“Soooo guess you can hit people in the face now and all you get is a $250 fine, good to know …,” Froling tweeted.
“And my surgery has cost over $2000 plus more specialist surgery to come maybe the fines could be put towards that.”
Froling’s teammate Marianna Tolo also took to Twitter to voice her displeasure at the findings.
“What the WNBL said happened,” Tolo tweeted with a GIF of Bart and Lisa Simpson throwing punches and kicks without making contact.
“Oops, that was unintentional. I wasn’t looking while I was typing,” she said in a follow up tweet.
The WNBL didn’t take kindly to the pair’s actions, slapping the Capitals and the two players with a “please explain”.
A league spokesman said a decision won’t be made on whether the WNBL would fine the pair until after they’ve had discussions.
The players have 48 hours to respond to the WNBL for breaching the ‘public criticism’ rule.
