Toe-to-toe battle for Horn fight

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

AUSTRALIAN boxing star Jeff Horn says Townsville is now locked in a fight with Brisbane to stage his upcoming bout with rising prodigy Tim Tszyu.

“I’m guessing it’s either going to be in Townsville or it’s going to be in Brisbane,” he said.

But his promoter Dean Lonergan said he could “neither confirm nor deny” reports that the superfight would be held at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on April 22.

“We’re at least two weeks away from making a decision,” he said.

“We like everything about Townsville, but nothing is guaranteed yet.

“Jeff’s preference is to fight in Queensland.”

JEFF Horn’s promoter Dean Lonergan says the Australian boxing star wants his superfight against Tim Tszyu to be held in Queensland as speculation mounts the bout is coming to Townsville.

Horn ( pictured) has said Brisbane and Townsville are now the main contenders for the April 22 fight, but Lonergan downplayed reports the bout was locked in.

“I can neither confirm or deny,” he said.

“We’re still in discussions with a number of people.

“We’re at least two weeks away from making a decision.

“We like everything about Townsville, but nothing is guaranteed yet.

“Jeff’s preference is to fight in Queensland. He lives in

Queensland and likes to fight in Queensland.”

Horn told TAB Radio yesterday that Townsville was firming as the venue for his superfight.

“I’m guessing it’s either going to be in Townsville or it’s going to be in Brisbane,” he said. “Townsville is not too far away and I think I would have a lot of support over there as well.”

Horn toured North Queensland in the lead up to his showdown against Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in 2017, with Horn scoring a controversial victory.

Horn said late last year that he would prefer his fight to be held in an open air venue such as Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
