NURTURING OUR NEXT GENERATION LEADERS

- GINA MOSCH

TEN Year 12 students from Pimlico State High recently spent a day sitting in the seats of our civic leaders.

Mayor Jenny Hill welcomed the student leaders from the school’s student council into the city’s council chambers.

Student council vice-president Charlotte Mcdonnell said they wanted to demonstrate that not all students were problematic.

“The news is currently oversaturated with youth crime,” she said.

“We want to make positive changes for our school and our community.”

Throughout the day, students learned invaluable leadership skills to help them with their roles as senior student councillors and prepare them for the rest of their lives.

Student councillor Carly Johnson said they spent the day developing their leadership skills for their roles.

“This was a fantastic opportunity for all members of the student council to work closely with each other and develop a clear plan targeted towards what we would like to achieve this year,” she said. “I learnt more about the processes of running an effective business meeting and how to pass motions by working with Joanne Keune.

“Additionally, I was also informed on the role and proceedings of the Townsville City Council during an enlightening Q and A session with Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill.”

Student councillor Ethan Lee Hang described the day as empowering and inspiring.

“Having the opportunity to work in such an important space allowed me to broaden my perspective on leadership,” he said.

“As the student council secretary, I often find myself as a main point of contact both internally and externally.

“Initially this role seemed a bit intimidating, however after the class we participated at I immediately became more comfortable.”
