Healthier you doesn’t mean fancy equipment

-

COULD you be happier if you looked after your body a little better? Veteran personal trainer Tom Law thinks a healthier world would be a much better world and has written a book, Tom’s Law Fit Happens, to help you get started.

“I feel we can all contribute a little to the betterment of the world,” Tom said.

“As a personal trainer, I want to put a little back for all the help, assistance and support I have received during my life.

“The average person needs to be active on most, preferably all, days of the week. They should accumulate 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical, or an equivalent combination of both moderate and vigorous activities each week.

“They also need to do muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days each week.”

Tom’s favourite exercises are push-ups, squats, lunges, chin-ups, crunches, walking, running or jogging, swimming and cycling.

“The reason these are my best exercises is you can do them without any special equipment at the park or at home. You do not have to go to a gym to do them and, in most instances, they are free.”

Another reason we need to exercise is many are missing the incidental exercise that used to be part of daily routines.

“Most seniors remember the days when exercise was achieved when doing the washing, scrubbing the floors, walking or cycling to work, and of course a lot of the work in the past was quite physical. In a predominantly sedentary world, we have a situation where we are working our bodies less and less due to modern inventions.

“Walk more, walk longer, stretch, practice balance, swim, play golf, cycle, and use the council-provided park equipment. Life is about movement, keep moving.”

Another excuse people often used, Tom said, was they had no money to exercise.

“The reality is that all you need is a pair of bathers, a set of gym shoes or runners, and perhaps a bicycle.

“If you are on a budget, forget the swimming or bike riding, and just do the remainder of the exercises.

“A friend of mine who has been an old age pensioner for some time and seldom goes outside the complex he lives.

“He gets his exercise by going up and down the unit’s internal stairs several times, six days a week, to get his workout in. He does his push-ups and squats in his bathroom, all for free. You can do the same. Your body will thank you for it.” Visit tomslaw.com.au.
