Payroll tax call

- CAITLAN CHARLES

DEB Frecklington has called on the State Government to further protect Queensland jobs with payroll tax relief following the Federal Government stimulus announcement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the $17.6 billion economic plan on Thursday, which is designed to keep Australian in jobs and businesses open.

The Opposition Leader said the coronavirus was the greatest threat to Queensland since the Global Financial Crisis and more needed to be done to counter the adverse effects it is having on the Australian economy. “What we need to do … is protect Queensland jobs, one way we can do that is by giving a relief to small businesses to medium businesses in relation to payroll,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“The LNP is calling on the Palaszczuk Government to give relief months.

“We are calling for the Palaszczuk Government to raise the payroll tax threshold from $1.3m to $6.5m, so businesses don’t have to pay this for six months.”

Mrs Frecklington said Deputy Premier Jackie Trad’s payroll tax holiday, announced earlier this month, was not enough.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the Government was preparing the Budget and would look at measures to help businesses.

“We are going to keep a close eye on how this unfolds, we will see if the Federal Government’s assistance package flows through the economy, helps those businesses and what that means,” she said.

“We will take the measures that are necessary to put Queenslanders, and their jobs, and their health, and that of their families, first.” for payroll for six
