Residents live in fear Break-ins drive security sales

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

TAKING extreme measures to ensure her own safety is a small price to pay to rest easy at night for Townsville resident Jan Alderton.

Ms Alderton has been living in fear in her own home after two of her neighbours had their cars stolen in the past 18 months.

She believes not enough is being done to deter people from breaking the law in Townsville.

After installing CCTV 10 years ago at her property, Ms Alderton recently upgraded her security camera system and installed alarmed security doors. It cost Ms Alderton $2000 to install four cameras and three alarmed security doors that are all connected to her smartphone.

If Ms Alderton leaves her home, she will be notified on her phone if anyone has entered the premises.

The 72-year-old said she was happy with her decision to secure her home. “I couldn’t feel any safer and I can go bed and not worry about anyone to breaking in and at my age that’s what you need,” she said.

“The three security doors were only $375 and even if you can’t key lock your door, it will set an alarm off.

“It is a lot cheaper than having your car stolen,” she said.

Townsville Titan Security owner Amedeo Dinardo has secured 3000 homes and businesses in 20 years.

Mr Dinardo said more people were taking their safety into their own hands.

“We have seen a 25 per cent increase (in business) in the last year,” he said.

“There is a big market with retirees going away and with the crime rate at the moment, they want to have something in place so they don’t come home to a burgled home.”

Mr Dinardo said he “solved people’s problems by giving them a solution”.

“We are happy we have been able to help Jan … and she has told me she feels safer at night now,” he said.

“I feel good if I can make someone feel safe and … give them the peace of mind that they deserve.”
